Securing the Future of a Smart World

Opportunities and Challenges in a 5G Connected Economy

With the coming of 5G and a smarter, more connected world, service providers face a plethora of strategic business and technology decisions with major ramifications for the future.

5G-enabled breakthroughs in throughput, lower latency and networking flexibility should open new revenue opportunities and business models for operators. Powerful new use cases around evolved Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications and massive Machine-to-Machine Communications (mMTC) will push the boundaries of digital transformation and network dependency for customers.

These same forces will also increase the risk of new threats and attack vectors and change the security landscape for mobile operators, enterprises and end-users.

In a new program, the BPI Network is exploring the following:

  • Where companies are on the journey to 5G
  • 5G priorities
  • Greatest benefits promised by 5G
  • Industries that will experience the most disruptive change
  • Use cases that are the biggest drivers for 5G
  • Security concerns around 5G investments

Facts & Stats

As with massive deployments of IoT devices on LTE networks, companies building 5G networks will need to create a root of trust that can be extended through the entire network. At the network level, this is accomplished with hardware security modules (HSMs), which can be either secure hardware or virtualized processing environments. (Source)

5G is up to 1,000 times faster than 4G, with 100 times less latency. (Source)

Since 2015, China has outspent the US in 5G infrastructure by $24B, according to a report by Deloitte. (Source)

U.S. operators will spend about $100 billion (excluding spectrum acquisitions) between 2018 and 2020 on upgrading their LTE networks and investing in 5G, according to the latest GSMA Intelligence report on 5G. (Source)

By the end of 2022, the number of 5G subscription will exceed half a billion. (Source)
